Media Relations
For years, I was an almighty gatekeeper. That is, I was the one who ignored your pitches, whether they were delivered via phone, email, snail mail (let's hope no one does that anymore) or—God forbid—in person. To be clear, it wasn't because I was trying to be a jerk. Rather, I'd receive so many of them, and, as is the case with so many reporters, most pitches are sorely lacking in all manner of critical ways.
Getting press is kind of like… well, journalism.
Want press? You need someone who speaks “Reporter.”
Despite studying four separate languages (Latin, French, Arabic and Spanish!), the only one I'm *actually* fluent in is Reporter.
That means I've got an eye for compelling angles as well as a brain wired to address the sacred "So what?" question. I can identify and leverage relevant elements (eg., what storytelling assets are available, whether it's someone other than a C-suite executive to interview or b-roll/compelling shots in the parlance of TV). I understand the news cycle and know when to pitch. I also know whom in the newsroom to pitch (insider secret: You're never only pitching one reporter; you're empowering them to pitch their editors, too).
How I can help:
These are just a few examples of ways I can assist with your media relations strategy:
Identify compelling/timely angles, including the available elements
Craft an effective pitching strategy and execute it
Build an exhaustive media list, whether it's tailored to a single story, city/region, event, target audience, etc.
Draft press releases
Facilitate interviews and help arrange other logistics
Provide backgrounders on specific reporters
Handle any follow-up questions or concerns
I can also help draft and pitch op-eds. Check out my portfolio for examples.
